MashUp for 2008

A mashup, according to Wikipedia is "a digital media file containing any or all of text, graphics, audio, video, and animation, which recombines and modifies existing digital works to create a derivative work." Every year DJ Earworm creates a mashup of the top popular songs of the year and makes it available via MP3 file. This year is no exception, but he added a twist: a video mashup as well.

YouTube videos are becoming a pop phenomenon themselves. After a musician makes a video for his or her song, mimics create videos emulating the video (and often the video's choreography). This year's YouTube hit was Beyonce's "Single Ladies", which inspired "Single Man" (modest version) (And Beyonce meets the Single Man) and many other interpretations.

Beyonce's hit video was a bit different from past YouTube dance crazes though. Beyonce admitted that her inspiration for the choreography came from watching mashups on YouTube! Beyonce's video was inspired by a mashup of a Fosse dance routine performed by Gwen Verdon with the hip-hop song "Walk It Out." Here is a link to the original Fosse routine.
