World Information Access Project 2008 Report

The World Information Access (WIA) project has just published a report that includes data on the arrest and prosecution of political bloggers around the world. According to the report, arrests of political bloggers have been on the rise over recent years, with a dramatic uptick in 2007, even though levels overall remain relatively low with 64 bloggers being prosecuted since 2003.

The WIA report also classifies the kinds of allegations made against bloggers—including legal charges for using a blog to cover social protest and posting comments about political figures, among other categories. According to the report, the total jail time served by these 64 bloggers is 940 months, with an average sentence of 15 months.

You can find the full report on the WIA website.

WIA is run by Phil Howard from University of Washington’s Department of Communication.
