Facebook and Privacy in the News

Three major privacy stories concerning Facebook have come out over the past week:

First, a Calvin College student has been suspended for one year over a Facebook message he allegedly posted about his ex-girlfriend. The college cited Mr. Harris, a sophomore, for violating technology and conduct codes at the institution, which refers to itself as “distinctively Christian.” [CHE]

And second, Facebook launched new Terms of Service this week and then took them back.

Is Everyone on Facebook?

Facebook now has 150 million users. "If Facebook were a country, it would be the eighth most populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria."

So is there anyone left that isn't on Facebook? Farhad Manjoo of Slate says: "There is no longer any good reason to avoid Facebook. The site has crossed a threshold—it is now so widely trafficked that it's fast becoming a routine aide to social interaction, like e-mail and antiperspirant."
