We will explore topics such as the use of technology in political campaigns and advocacy, public policies regarding the regulation or use of technology, and technology as the product of politics.

The T&S Gateway Seminar meets every Tuesday beginning September 30, 2008 in Harold Frank Hall 1132 (formerly Engineering I)

The Fall 2008 offering of the Technology & Society Seminar Series (re)addresses the theme of social computing and its impacts on technology and society. Even in the short two years since the first time this topic was explored, social computing technology and its use in everyday society have greatly expanded. In this version of the Gateway Seminar, we will look at three broad categories of topics:

TV and New Media

Historical Literature: History of Science

A reading course in a general area of history, specifically designed to prepare M.A. candidates for their comprehensive examination fields, but also appropriate for Ph.D. students seeking broad preparation. Introduces the student to the sources, historiography, and general literature of the field in question.

Advanced Historical Literature: History of Science, Technology and Medicine

Internet and Social Movements

This course is the third course in a series of five courses related to a NSF CAREER Award examining Internet activism. Prior 146/294 instances focused on internet and social science research broadly and project design and management. This instance of the course is designed to develop substantive expertise on the literature on social movements and the Internet, along with other new media. Readings will come from multiple disciplines, with a greater balance of readings oriented toward sociology.

Scientists and the Cold War

This graduate level readings seminar focuses on the history of scientists and scientific communities during the Cold War. A major part of this is an exploration of the involvement of scientists with politics and political and governmental institutions during the Cold War, primarily in the United States. Some of the themes we will address include: the interaction of science, technology, and foreign policy; the production of knowledge during the Cold War; and the evolving institutions of postwar science and technology.

Digital Media Technology and Engineering

A six-quarter practical programming course devoted to digital audio applications development. The emphasis is on learning to use current state-of-the-art programming methods, tools, and library APIs. Programming assignments are given in the C, C++, Java, Smalltalk and/or SuperCollider programming language. Topics: A. Using Commerical I/O APIs; B. Spectral Transformations; C. Spatial Sound Manipulation; D. Sound Synthesis Techniques; E. Multi-rate Control and Synchronization; F. Media Application Integration.

Political Communication
