Matthew Turk is a professor in the Computer Science Department and the chair of the Media Arts and Technology Program, an interdisciplinary program positioned at the convergence of arts, media, and technology. Dr. Turk's research is primarily in computer vision and human-computer interaction. Much of it is concerned with using computer vision as an input modality in interactive systems. That means using cameras (and other sensors) to perceive relevant information about people - e.g., identity, facial expression, body movement, gestures - and then using this information to improve the interface between humans and computers. This is part of a larger goal, developing "Perceptual Interfaces" (multi-modal interfaces, natural interfaces, intelligent interfaces, etc.). See the
Four Eyes Lab web site for research projects, publications, etc.
